This Mother’s Day Treat Mom to a Mom-Made Novelty: Sift Cupcakes

Mother’s Day is a month away, but it is never too early to start planning this much needed, well deserved, annual event.  What better way to celebrate than indulging in a sweet confection?  Try opening a box full of gorgeously decorated, divinely flavored cupcakes created by a fellow mom!  Andrea Ballus of Sift Cupcake and Dessert Bar – now open in Santa Rosa, Cotati, and Napa – is gaining a national reputation for her unexpected, fantastically flavored desserts.   Read on for a virtual taste of this local treat.

From Frosting at Home to Food Network

Andrea Ballus (pictured above in the center of husband and best friend) says she’s lucky she she grew up in a household where the Kitchen-Aid mixer was used more than the microwave. Her mother baked and decorated her birthday cakes from scratch every year.  Her father always had a new bread creation in the oven. Learning her trade “from the kitchen floor up,” Andrea now sports quite a reputation as a baker.   In fact, our local mom-preneur recently appeared on the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.

Not only is Andrea an accomplished dessert maker, this 33-year-old woman has moxy, drive, and flair.  You can get a sense of her style from her cupcake confections (which she says must always have fantastic flavors and fun frosting) or you can take a few moments to watch her in action via her Cupcake Wars entry video on youtube.   She’ll have you both laughing and feeling starved for something sweet.

Andrea is also unique in that she is very open and generous.  For example, Andrea happily shares trade secrets!  She recently opened the Sift classroom at the Santa Rosa location, where she offers baking and decorating classes for both kids and adults.

Want to try a recipe now?  Andrea shares several via the Food Network including this one for Coconut Cupcakes with Chocolate Ganache Filling and Caramel Buttercream Frosting.

Quick Rising Recipe to Success

How did this young woman and mother come to her success?  A few questions and answers reveal morsels of truth other mom-preneurs can savor.

Q. What was it like starting your shop?
A. “Oh man, it was tough! I think I only accumulated about 6 hours of sleep in the first week of being open…wait, make that the first month! I would be baking and making frosting and decorating at the same time! I learned to have 6 hands… well, to beg my friends and family to pitch in for cupcake pay.”

Q. What have been your biggest obstacles?
A. “Trying to figure out how many cupcakes and desserts to make every day! We don’t like leftovers, but we don’t like to have empty cake plates either! Its tough to balance on a day to day basis.”

Q.  Are cupcakes just a craze?
A.“I’ll admit, I’m a little crazed about cupcakes…but I tend to think that people need cupcakes. People like cake and frosting…most people have this on their birthday. We make it so that any day can be your birthday! A little package of cake and frosting that you don’t have to share, love it!”

Q. What inspires you?
A.“I’m inspired by great flavors, unexpected combinations and fantastic design. I’m also inspired by good old Martha, Mom-entrepreneurs and my husband whose response is always, ‘it’s taken care of’.

High Style Crafting in the Radzat Barn Studio

I am continually amazed by the legions of Sonoma County moms I encounter who wield a baby on one hip, tote a bucket of chicken feed on the other, and sport a paint brush tucked behind one ear.  Today’s featured mamas manage to balance creative endeavors with raising children and chickens, while also taking on incredible stints as mom-preneurs.   Meet sisters Ashley Radzat and Kayse Hofland, known for their streaming creativity and high style.  Then come along for a visual tour of the crafting opportunities these sisters offer in their incredible barn studio setting.

Ashley and Kayse

With a mother known as “Curator of Enchantment,” it is no stretch to say Ashley Radzat and Kayse (Radzat) Hofland have creativity in their veins.  I can just picture Ashley and Kayse as babies in some old, English pram, looking on as their mother scoured flea markets for vintage French letters, crystal door nobs, or sterling silver spoons. “It’s hard to explain what my mom creates,” says Kayse speaking of Marilyn Radzat’s famous, mixed-medium art pieces.  However, Marliyn’s art is a hot feature with renowned artist publications such as Stampington and Company’s “Art Doll.”

Growing up under the wing of an artist who knows how mix, match, and create the fantastic, clearly inspired these girls.   If you ever visited their “I’m a Little Teapot” shop in Railroad Square, you’ll be nodding your head in agreement.   Remember the gorgeous milk glass cake stands, glittering chandeliers, and gorgeous velvet dresses?  Part party venue, special occasion dress store, and gift shop, “Teapot” was a true resource for parents looking to offer memorable experiences to their children.

Sono-Ma Soiree photographer Mariah Smith captures an enchanting moment at a Radzat styled “Teapot” party here:

Not long ago, Ashley and Kayse sold Teapot and moved on to other endeavors.  Ashley, a trained Waldorf teacher, spends much of her time creating in the classroom while Kayse dabbles in interior design.  Both ladies are also raising girls – Ashley is mother to two daughters and Kayse has three daughters of her own.

Welcome to the Radzat Barn Studio

Ashley and Kayse continue to find ways to channel their creativity.   A few months ago, they helped their mother move into a barn studio where all three ladies find space to create.

The barn’s first floor is filled with the tools and collected treasures – all artfully arranged by Kayse, of course.  You’ll find vessels filled with vintage buttons, collections of antique keys, an enormous kiln, and ample curiosities and wonders waiting to manifest the imagination.

The Radzat ladies welcome Sono-Ma and guests to explore the barn and try out a crafting experience at our upcoming “Delight Night” soiree.  The ladies will ask for a $4 supply fee in exchange for the opportunity to create a stylish, button ring.

Soirees Form Community

With six soiree events now behind us, I can say that these events are largely about honoring our local craftspeople and the artist that lives within us all.

“This is amazing.  I’ve never heard of anything like this before – and we need it so much!” says Laurent Alfani, French photographer as he took in Sono-Ma’s Studio Soiree in March 2011.  Fifty folks braved a March storm to huddle in Paul Kaiser’s 10,000 square foot wood working studio.  They came hungry for the experience of touring a menagerie of local family artisans. And oh the inspiration these local parents – who, like Laurent, are often artists themselves – gleaned as they toured the studio workspace.

The pounding rain on the studio roof was barely audible over the laughter, storytelling, and animated conversations taking place throughout the barn.

What was the magic behind all this that so touched Laurent?  Could it be awe invoked by the vision of each artisan vendor raising a family and managing to make a living producing high quality, hand made goods?  Was it the generous feeling of receiving complimentary tastes and experiences (not to mention the free entry to the event!)? Was it the varied display of talent in our community (wood working, henna artistry, fashion designing, fairy robotics, culinary arts) that made us all feel a bit prideful and lucky?  Or did it have something to do with making space and time for art and passion?  It is truly something to legitimize creative activities that might otherwise fall by the wayside in these difficult years of parenting AND surviving an economic downturn!

As the evening wound down, sated guests armed themselves with umbrellas and a feeling akin to unity.  They walked out the barn’s double doors with recipes, creative ideas, and small trinkets from each artisan – relics from an evening of real community.
